dr. lynn gary atkins, JR. artistic director
A native of New Jersey, Lynn has been teaching and leading choral groups in the classroom, the concert hall, and the sanctuary for more than 10 years. A member of Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society, Dr. Atkins earned a BM in Music Education from Westminster Choir College of Rider University, as well as a MM and a DMA in Choral Conducting from James Madison University. In addition to his work with OVC, Dr. Atkins is Director of Choral Music at Collegiate School in Richmond, VA; serves as artistic director of the James River Ringers handbell ensemble, and continues to sing professionally, conduct, and adjudicate choirs across the Eastern Coast of the US.
sonia elliott, managing DIRECTOR
Sonia has called Richmond her home since 2001 and One Voice Chorus her musical home since 2008. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Averett University. Bringing a wealth of musical experience with her from her years of playing piano and clarinet, to her undergrad chorus days of musical performances throughout Germany, and performances with the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall, Sonia is pleased to work with One Voice Chorus in continuing its mission of musical excellence, diversity, and service to the community.
rita smith, accompanist
Rita has worked with a wide variety of choirs, vocalists, and instrumental soloists, both as an accompanist and collaborative musician. A native Virginian, she studied Piano and Church Music at Bluefield College and Carson Newman College. Since 2005, she has enjoyed her work on the music staff at Second Baptist Church (River Rd. and Gaskins) where she serves as an accompanist and director of the Young Adult Ensemble; as well as staff pianist at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond.
Alma hughes, board president
One Voice Chorus Board President Alma Hughes is a founding member of One Voice Chorus, and is proud to have been a part of the organization since the beginning. Combining her concern for racial reconciliation and social justice with her passion for music, One Voice represents a way to make a difference in the best possible way—musically. Alma is a VP in Learning and Development at Regions Bank.
